9 ways to cleanse your Ouija board

We all know how Ouija boards might sometimes attach dark and icky energies. But how do we cleanse the board and ourselves to avoid lingering spirits? When you are a beginner, it can be hard to know what to do.

Why cleansing is essential when using an Ouija board

Cleansing is not the same as cleaning (with water and a cloth). Cleansing is a ritual using crystals, incents, rituals, or prayers to expel unwanted energies.

You must know how to cleanse your board as well as yourself if you are going to use a Ouija board (also known as talking- or spirit boards). You might run into negative or dark energies, spirits, or entities when using a Ouija board. These can attach to you or the site where you did your reading.

If you don’t eliminate negative energies, they can affect your mood, health, and emotional wellbeing. It is recommended to cleanse yourself and your board at least once a month or if your intuition tells you something is off.

The same techniques apply to cleansing Ouija boards as other divination tools such as tarot cards, pendulums, crystals, dowsing rods, etc.

1. Sage the board and planchette (pointer)

A very effective way to cleanse the board is to use incense. You can use other incents than sage if you prefer, but sage is very potent and effective. Other options are;

• Palo Santo
• Myrrh
• Lavender
• Frankincense

Sage with a set intent of cleansing the board. Without a clear intention and a grounded mind, no incent in the world will work. Therefore, always perform your cleansing ritual when you are calm, collected, and grounded.

Be sure to sage yourself, the pointer (planchette), and the board.

The video below will give you deeper insights. I recommend this technique if you run into negative spirits that won’t leave. You need to create a thick smoke to make it work. No area should go untouched by the smoke. Open all cabinets, drawers, closets, and boxes.

2. Earth burial cleanse

Go outside and sprinkle dirt on your Ouija board. You can dig a little hole and bury it overnight for an even more powerful cleansing. Be sure that there is no rain, though, as it might ruin your board. The same applies if the board is made of cardboard or other moist-sensitive material.

When you do an earth burial, your board will reconnect with the earth’s energy and resolve and release any energies bound to the board. This technique is very potent if you suspect the board acts as a portal.

Bury it with the intention of closing any portals. The intention is vital for success. I often say: “Hereby I release all energies back to earth; this portal is now closed.”

3. Full moon cleanse

A full-moon cleanse is a very potent cleansing ritual for Ouija boards. Place your board near your window, or even better, outside, and let the full moon cleanse it. Be sure to watch the weather forecast; you don’t want to expose it to rain or bad weather as it can get ruined.

Let the board soak in moon rays all night. This will certainly help you clear away residual or negative energies.

4. Crystal cleansing and charging

One effective way of cleansing your Ouija board is by using crystals. Place them on your board or in a circle enclosing it. Any crystal works, but some crystals are more potent than others. The best crystals for cleansing your Ouija board are found under “primary”, but you can also use crystals from the “secondary” list.

5. Salt burial cleansing

Salt burial (you can also sprinkle or create a salt circle) is one of the most potent ways of resetting, cleansing, clearing, and charging your Ouija board. This is my go-to technique for cleansing all my divination tools if I notice something is off.

As an Ouija board is quite large, it is not that convenient to bury it in salt (if you can do so, this is the most powerful way). Be sure to put it in a textile bag (not plastic!) before buying it in salt. It might damage your board otherwise.

Plastic is not recommended as the plastic will take away the effect of the salt.

If you choose to sprinkle or enclose your board, it is straightforward. Sprinkle salt on top of your board and let it sit for a couple of hours.

If you enclose it, create a circle of salt surrounding your board. Let it sit overnight.

You can use Himalayan salt, but regular table salt works as well. You don’t need anything fancy. This makes it my popular go-to. You can get your hands on salt from the grocery shop if you get into an emergency.

Be sure to collect all salt (I mean EVERYTHING) and release it back to the earth. Just dig a little hole and bury it.

6. Bell or Singing bowl cleansing

Bell or singing bowl cleansing of your Ouija board is straightforward. Set a clear intention (as always), and get going. If you have a bell, you strike three times. That’s all. Let the sound linger off and imagine all negative energies dissolving.

There are many types of singing bowls available on the market. They are gorgeous as well. Some are made in brass, others in glass or crystal. 7. Silk wrapping

Wrap your Ouija board in a silk or velvet scarf in between readings. Place your pointer (planchette) in a little bag beside your board. This will keep your board “inactive” between sessions.

Storing your board with dignity and care will help you get more accurate readings. It will not lead to great readings if you throw it away in the closet, along with your messy stuff. The way you treat it will transfer to your board. After all, it is your energy and intent that is key.

8. Runes and symbols

Runes and protective symbols are a great way to cleanse your Ouija board. Runes are used for protection spells and sigils. This technique is not for beginners; it is always preferred you know runes before cleansing or clearing using them.

9. Knocking and blowing

To clear and cleanse the Ouija board, you can knock on it three times – knock, knock, knock. Blow on it and imagine all negative energy blowing away like dust. The intention is key here. It can’t be simpler than this.
